What is Lumbar Spondylosis?
Lumbar spondylosis is age-related degeneration of the lower spine, affecting the vertebrae, discs, and joints. It can cause chronic lower back pain, stiffness, and nerve-related symptoms like leg pain or numbness.
Causes
- Disc degeneration with age
- Bone spur formation
- Facet joint arthritis
- Past spine injury or repetitive strain
- Poor posture & obesity
Common Symptoms
- Chronic lower back pain and stiffness
- Pain worsens with bending or lifting
- Leg pain (sciatica) if nerves are affected
- Numbness or weakness in legs
- Reduced flexibility
Diagnosis
- Physical examination
- X-ray for bone changes
- MRI for nerve compression
Treatment & Rehabilitation
- Activity modification and ergonomic advice
- Pain relief medication as advised
- Physiotherapy: core strengthening, posture correction
- Heat or ice therapy
- Manual therapy & traction (if needed)
Physiotherapy Exercises
- Pelvic tilt (10 reps)
- Bridging (8–12 reps)
- Knee-to-chest stretch (20–30 sec hold)
- Bird-dog core exercise
- Hamstring stretch

Prevention
- Maintain healthy weight
- Regular exercise
- Use proper lifting technique
- Ergonomic work setup
When to See a Doctor
- Severe or worsening leg weakness
- Loss of bladder/bowel control (emergency)
- No improvement after 4–6 weeks
