Cervical Spondylosis

Cervical Spondylosis is age-related wear and tear affecting the bones, discs and joints of the neck (cervical spine). It commonly causes neck pain, stiffness and sometimes numbness or weakness that can travel down the arm.

What causes it?

  • Disc degeneration and loss of disc height with age
  • Bone spurs (osteophytes) forming on vertebrae
  • Poor posture and prolonged forward head positions (phones/computers)
  • Past neck injuries or repetitive strain

Common symptoms

  • Persistent neck pain or stiffness
  • Headaches that start at the base of the skull
  • Radiating pain, tingling or numbness in shoulder, arm or fingers
  • Weakness in the hand or difficulty with fine finger movements
  • Balance problems or unsteady walking (rare — needs urgent attention)

Diagnosis

Doctors diagnose cervical spondylosis by clinical exam and, if needed, imaging such as X-ray or MRI. Nerve conduction tests are sometimes used when nerve root or spinal cord involvement is suspected.

Treatment

  • Physiotherapy: posture correction, neck strengthening and mobility exercises
  • Short-term pain relievers or muscle relaxants as advised by a physician
  • Hot/cold packs and gentle traction or stretching
  • Ergonomic adjustments at work — screen at eye level, frequent breaks
  • In severe cases with nerve compression, specialist referral and possible surgery

Simple neck exercises (gentle)

  1. Chin tucks — sit tall, gently pull chin back and hold 5–8 seconds. Repeat 8–10 times.
  2. Side-bend stretch — tilt ear to shoulder, hold 15–20 seconds each side.
  3. Shoulder blade squeezes — squeeze shoulder blades together and hold 5 seconds. Repeat 10 times.
When to see a doctor: Seek immediate care for sudden weakness, loss of coordination, severe numbness, or bowel/bladder problems.
